Lore
For eons, material beings of the overworld have attempted to acquire the power of the Elements. Some have made progress, and other have gotten close... but the closest of all were the humans. In various deserts, humans mastered the secrets of fire, using it to fend off the night's cold. In the grasslands, they tamed the stubborn earth, cultivating its soil to raise their crops. In the tundras, they harnessed the flow of water, employing its ice for warmth. And in the mountains, they learned to navigate the winds, using their currents to maintain balance. However, mastering all four Elements simultaneously remained beyond their reach.
As humans mastered the Elements in disparate corners of the world, their civilizations began to emerge and expand. Over time, these societies flourished but were ultimately doomed to fade away, lacking the unified power of all four Elements. There was one unique type of human: the Nagual.
The Nagual are believed to be the only beings capable of mastering all four Elements. They possess the unique ability to remember their past lives, allowing them, after centuries of reincarnations, to recall experiences from every corner of the world. This collective memory grants them the Elemental Knowledge.
As a result of their ability to recall past life, The Nagual can take on multiple human forms in the material world and also transform into a singular entity in Teocalli, the sky realm
Teocalli is inhabited by Elemental Spirits, lesser incarnations of the Elemental Gods. These spirits, while immortal and indestructible, can be pacified.
As the Nagual, the sole keeper of the Elemental Knowledge and with the power to reincarnate indefinitely, your mission is to pacify the Elemental Gods, master all the elements, and achieve a peaceful end. Accomplishing this will compel the Elemental Gods to fulfill their promise of bestowing the power of the elements upon humanity.
Inspiration
Teocalli is the name of the Mexica temples made by the ancient civilization of Mesoamerica. The Mexicas were one of many cultures with deep cultural diversity and “religious” practice. They are one of many beautiful religious cultures lost to genocide, or just the passage of time.
This game is also heavily inspired by Avatar the Last Airbender, another series driven by ancient cultures lost to genocide, and the diversity of the cultures in the world.
Artistically, I really like voxel art style games such as: Lay of Land, Isotopia, Crossy Road, Trove and of course Minecraft.
The last inspiration also comes from the types of games that I enjoy the most. These are intense First Person Shooters where the player shoots more than just guns (if any guns at all).
Project Idea and Key Features
Therefore, the idea of this project is to merge all these inspirations. A voxel game with an Mexica/Aztec theme in which the player wants to master the power of the elements. After reading the Elemental Knowledge page, the player must choose to incarnate as the element they desire. Once they have done so, they incarnate in Teocalli. A floating island made out of four different biomes representing different cultures (Mexica, Egyptian, Buddhist, and Inuit), and in the middle a sacred temple inspired by the pyramids that were once in Mexico City before the colonization. This place is called Teocalli and in Teocalli the Elemental Spirits will spawn. After the player pacifies enough Elemental spirits (without dying) an Elemental God will spawn. Once they do they will unlock that Elemental’s God power. Once they have done that another four times, unlocking all the elements the waves of Elemental Spirits will spawn until the player dies. In doing so, the player has completed its objective and released the power of the elements to all humans. Meaning that civilization can persist.
